F.C. Bayern Munich is one of the German clubs considered as one of the greatest football clubs in the world. Bayern is one of the five clubs to win all three major European trophies; European Cup or Champions League, Europa League and the Cup Winner’s Cup, the latter being Juventus FC, Ajax, Chelsea FC., and Manchester United. In addition to dominating the home league, Bayern is ranked third on All-Time Club World Rankings. With 25 national titles, 17 DFB-Pokals, Bayern Munich undoubtedly goes in history as the greatest.

Bayern Munich success

Though for a successful club, Bayern didn’t rose to prominence straight away. The club was founded in 1990 and had to wait until 1932 for its first-ever national championship. However, one title just couldn’t save Bayern of mediocrity for long. Due to the rise of Nazism Germany, the club was relegated in 1955 and was brought on their toes financially by the end of the 50s. The whole decade only bright spot for Bayern was their first DFB-Pokal (1957).

Bundesliga was founded in 1963 and Bayern even wasn’t among the sixteen teams invited to the league. After two seasons, the club gained promotion for the Bundesliga, led by Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, and Gerd Muller. It was during their time (1965-1979), Bayern turned to a football superpower. In those 14 years, the club won four Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokals, a Cup Winner’s Cup (1967), and three consecutive European Cups (1974-1976).

Bayern Munich’s legends

Bayern continued their dominance in the home competition as well in the European competitions lead by Paul Breitner and Karl Heinz Rummenigge. The two are often joked as ‘FC Breitnigge’ due to Bayern’s over-reliance on them. During the 80s, the club added six Bundesliga trophies, three DFB-Pokals, yet European silverware was hard to come by. However, they made to the European Cup final in 1982 and 1987.

An Era of Threat

The early 90s came as turmoil at Bayern. After winning another Bundesliga title in 1990, the club ended the 1991-92 season having a hard time off the relegation zone. An unexpected defeat by the hands of Norwich City F.C. in the 1994 UEFA Cup was the worst of the decade for the club. The following season, Bayern appointed Der Kaiser who led them to their 13th league title the same year.

The European Scene

With two decades without a European trophy, Bayern handed the managerial duty to Ottmar Hitzfeld in the start of the 1998/1999 season. Over Hitzfeld’s six years at the club, Bayern won a Champions League, four Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokals. In 2005, Bayern moved the new Allianz Arena from Olympiastadion, built for the 1972 Olympic Games. The shift saw Bayern sharing the stadium with TSV 1860 Munich.

While adding home league titles to their silverware collection, Bayern failed to gain success in international competition. The club failed to pass through the Champions League quarter-finals in between 2002 to 2010. The Champions League drought came to an end in 2013. Bayern defeated long-time rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the 2013 finals for the European silverware.
